When a major cold front leaves a lot of heavy rain clouds behind it makes for some rather dramatic daybreaks. Sure, it is hard to catch the actual sun rising but it sure provides for some nice drama. It also creates an unusual contrast of the bright foaming surf spilling over dark lava with dark skies overhead.

And then, as the morning rainstorms leave the area and the sun tries to make it through to brighten everyone's mood up it creates this wonderful soft light diffused through the remaining clouds and water in the air.

Hawaii became the 50th state to join the United States on August 21, 1959. The capital city is Honolulu (Oahu). The highest point is Mauna Kea at 13,803 feet (4207 meters) (island of Hawaii, aka The Big Island), a dormant volcano last erupting 2460 BC. Mauna Kea is over 33,000 feet (10000 meters) tall, making it the world's tallest mountain measured from its base to the summit; the majority of which is under water. The highest point on Kauai is Kawakini Peak about a mile south of Mt. Waialeale, the volcano that originally built up the island.

If you follow my blog and have read my previous posts about my experience in the Valley of Fire you already know how exciting it was for me. Rock formations, textures, and colors were everywhere. I thoroughly enjoyed looking for more and more the nature had to offer. And I also liked the juxtaposition of the warm earth tones against the blue sky.

The other thing you probably know about me by now is that not only do I like pristine landscapes but I also like to find interesting interactions of humanity and the landscape. Yes, humans most certainly often negatively interfere with nature's beauty. But here and there, the man-made objects just fit in, even enhance the look. And roads are one such structure. Sometimes, they're unbelievably straight disappearing in the distance, other times, they are winding and moving with the land.

Industrial Decay on Pinhole

From the woods to some wonderful decay subjects. I’m not sure what took me so long to realize this but in my opinion, this destination is perfect for pinhole photography and the feel one gets out of it. And even more so with the large format pinhole straight on the high contrast direct positive photo paper.

A large flywheel is the subject of the first photograph here. While the lettering is not prominent here reaching into the high-end of the exposure scale here it's still a hint about the capture of the photograph. I like including text in pinhole photographs and enjoy how it gets horizontally flipped. Well, it would have also been upside down but it's easy to turn the paper around and put it right side up. It's actually this turning that flips the left and right.

The old tram car proved to be a wonderful subject for a pinhole photograph too. Here, the angled corner shot takes advantage of the unlimited depth of field of a pinhole photograph. I also feel that the lack of perfect sharpness combined with the high contrast black and white paper worked really well with the transportation decay here.

Road Trip: Route 66 Part IX - Galena, Kansas

August 20, 2018

Kansas became the 34th state to join the United States on January 29, 1861. The capital city is Topeka. The highest point is Mount Sunflower at 4,039 feet.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 17 - June 27 - Route 66 - Galena, KS (Previous 2013 Road Trip posts: Indiana Dunes, De Immigrant, Amana Colonies, Des Moines, Madison County Roads, Bridges of Madison County, White Pole Road, Great Platte River Road Archway Monument, Golden Spike Tower & Union Pacific's Bailey Rail Yard, Loveland Pass, The Resting Day at Powderhorn, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Cimarron, Colorado National Monument, Fruita Rodeo, Grand Mesa, Arches National Park, Grand Junction, Grand Mesa Creek, Arches National Park Add-On, Canyonlands National Park, The Little Big Moments of Road Tripping, Mesa Verde National Park, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Train Depot, Pecos National Historical Park, Route 66 Part I, Santa Rosa, NM, Route 66 Part II, Santa Rosa, NM, Route 66 Part III, Tucumcari, Route 66 Part IV: Cadillac Ranch, Route 66 Part V: Bug Ranch), Route 66 Part VI: Conoco & Magnolia, Moore, OK after the 2013 Tornado, Route 66 Part VII - Catoosa, OK, Route 66 Part VIII - Largest Totem Pole, Route 66 Part IX - Galena, Kansas

Baxter Springs, Oklahoma, Phillips Gas on Route 66Baxter Springs, OklahomaPhillips Gas on Route 66 Would you believe it? After over 5 years this 2013 road trip photo blog is finding its way to the finish line. To help it along, a we are making a double hop today from the previous stop at the largest totem pole at Foyil, OK. First, the northbound track takes us across the state border from Oklahoma to Kansas and the town of Baxter Springs.

And from there, Galena, KS is right around the corner. This was our first time tracking Route 66 through there but at the risk of a spoiler alert I will admit that since that first 2013 visit we made it back two more times and had fun each time. It's nice to see how things are going, witness the changes, and also be able to feel almost at home so far away from home. And with all of this road tripping talk guess where I'd love to be now?

Galena Railroad Depot, Kansas, Route 66Galena Railroad Depot, KansasRoute 66 The first Galena stop is at the old railroad depot, which now houses the Galena Mining and Historical Museum. The tie to the building's railroad days is hard to miss.

And from there it's right to Cars on the Route 66, a very cool stop on the Mother Road. It's themed after the Disney Cars movie with a nice Route 66 gift shop and some refreshments. The main character of the 2013 stop certainly was the original Mater standing outside with a wonderfully rusty look. No wonder it inspired such a charismatic character!

The vintage looking gas station is also an eye-catcher and provides a super backdrop for memorable road trip photos.

There are also a few more vintage cars across the street that provide for great photo ops, especially if you happen to visit either early in the morning to have them lit up or when the day is ending with the sun setting behind the cars.

Then, on the way out of town, this ghost town like view opened up. Probably never the favorite view of the locals but so full of character and mood. These views can be found anywhere, even in busy cities. This one happens to be in Galena, Kansas along Route 66.

Sometimes the coveted golden hours of the morning or evening just don't cut it. During these hours city streets running north to south are half buried in deep shadows. Only mid-day really shines the light on the scene! For color photographs, the warm light of the edges of the day is also more pleasing. For black and white photographs, colors matter little. Yes, the light may be harsh but maybe that's just what the scene is calling for!
